Itchy Throat Easing Tea

Beloved readers, you and I are going to get through this cold together. Thank you for hanging in there with me.

I’m starting to suspect something a little stronger than a common cold- a sinus infection perhaps with the way my eyes, cheekbones, and teeth ache. I also woke up with an itchy throat which is usually a heads up that a cough is coming at me soon.

I hate coughs. More than the incessant runny nose, I absolutely hate coughs. I had respiratory issues as a child so non-stop coughing is far too familiar and I do my best to avoid it when possible. The painful sore throat and aching ribs are my cold & flu nightmare. So of course, I reached for my herb cabinet and so far so good, this little infusion recipe is keeping the cough at bay. Magic of Herbs: Mamawort

Part of my self-assigned Lunar Apothecary homework is to write up go-to herbal profiles from my growing experience with my beloved herbs. The medicinal properties are always easy to gather up, but I needed to do better for the spiritual work I do with the herbs. So here goes with my Magic of Herbs series!

Mamawort aka Motherwort (Leonorus cardiaca)

A favorite of mine, the ever dear Motherwort (Leonorus cardiaca), for a comfort that imbues you with the courageous and strengthened heart she is named Leonora for.

Mamawort, as I call her after being introduced to her by this name at The Sage Honey, offers us peace as we sit with heartache. Mamawort is a bitter shadow herb and she uses that insight to bring on light. She helps us release stagnant energy that weighs us down and keeps us from seeking light. She works with the realms beyond life as we see it keeping us connected but protected.

I associate her with the mothers in my tradition, particularly the Iyami and Yemaya, mothers who have known bitterness and are fiercely protective of those they protect as their children. For those who’ve had to mother ourselves, and for the mother spirits we found in queer and trans spaces, I cast Mamawort in my love spell for our grieving hearts.

Mamawort also works with folks who bleed with the moon, helping to regulate our cycles physically and spiritually. She can bring on blocked menses as well as alleviate pain during cramping. Beyond the physical, I’ve been thankful for Mamawort when on the bleeding stage of my cycle as I’m usually in a state of heightened stress and anxiety.

Mamawort is very bitter; I recommend tinctures or if used in tea, blended with supportive herbs and honey. Lots of honey!

A blend that I’ve especially enjoyed is a tea of Mamawort, Chamomile, and Lemon Balm + Honey for a soothing mix.

Reinforcement Tea Blend

More and more, I’m feeling a particular need to ensure my core power centers- root, sacral, and solar spaces- are protected and clear. So I whipped a blend up to shore my foundations up.

Enjoy it yourself by mixing:

  • Rosemary – protection, clearing, grounding
  • Dandelion Root – release, detox, grounding
  • Holy Basil – bolstering, calming, reassuring, purifying, promotes well-being
  • Thyme – encouraging (emphasis on the courage), clearing,
  • Calendula – soothing, heals old wounds, protection, clearing, warming
