on valentine’s day we wear yellow

Today was not a perfect day, but it was one that showed me what it was to hold love unshakeable within such that nothing could move it.

I woke up to a stunning daybreak, gold shining through the windows. The day quickly turned grey and dark and a thunderstorm complete with a tornado warning followed. Much like the weather, the people I interacted with felt like a whirwind of chaos, pain, and disorder. The promise of my time beyond the workday kept me going- that and holy basil and ginger black tea.

As soon as I got home I made sure to set the tone for the rest of the day, beginning with Oshun’s space. Valentine’s Day is a commercial creation, yes- but I believe in collective power. Beyond all the consumerism, all around us thoughts are turning to love. It’s complicated, of course. Along with that is trauma and pain but love magic still rules the day, and it is for us to turn and work towards ourselves, our communities, and our healing. I hope you got a chance to let today be a space to set intentions for healing around love (particularly self-love), such that can be sustained for the rest of the year.

In that spirit, I was overjoyed to receive the news that andi grace’s collective effort, we believe you: femmes surviving toxic masculinity would be available for the community today. It fills my heart to have been part of this brewed spell of femme heart healing. The e-zine is available with a donation at your discretion and financial access. In addition a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Black Lives Matter.

Explore Your Heartspace, The Two Waters Tea Spread

Use this spread to explore the rich depths of your heartspace. I avoided traditional questions for the positions instead giving you an overview of the intention behind each herb’s position. I invite you to either leave the positions as is, or craft your own question for your cards. Let your heart instinct guide the reading of this spread.

finding pockets of air, spaces to breathe

Heart is still weighed down but here is some of what has been helping. I share it with you and hope you find some heart ease. Take care. Self-care is resistance.

– Alexis Pauline Gumbs, poethealer and spinner of love webs, offers up a poem for the family we never got to meet: ‘pulse’

but now i am pulse

and now you
are flame.

a love spell for our grieving queer hearts. A ritual whose energy I returned to by brewing the herbs I cast into a heart heal tea this morning.

I cast Lemon Balm for broken hearts,
I cast Motherwort to hold us,
I cast Sage for those risen to ancestor,
I cast Rosemary as we remember,
I cast Rose for love, always.

In praise of Latin Night at the Queer Club, and the ways we made it sacred ground (or an ode to that one time you and that hard femme shared lipstick and then shared lipstick and broke apart as Selena came on and you rushed the dancefloor)

Outside, tomorrow, hangovers, regrets, the grind. Outside, tomorrow, the struggle to effect change. But inside, tonight, none of that matters. Inside, tonight, the only imperative is to love.

– Alexis J. Cunningfolk has a few suggestions for more herbs that heal in times of tragedy

While the following is only a short list of suggestions, I am working on a much larger resource on herbs and trauma that I’ll be sharing freely with folks in the coming weeks. I’ll post about it on my blog and the various social media outlets where I can be found.

– Chani offers her starlit insight to guide us through this week

Saturn square Neptune (especially in this highly mutable astrological moment) can lend to feelings of confusion, disassociation and disenfranchisement. This is the point in the cycle at which we can no longer deny what is falling down, what is failing completely and what needs to be dealt with and dissolved…When we honestly look at how the structures that we are up against (Saturn) clash with the dreams we have for our lives (Neptune), we stand at the cross section of what needs to be done and what could be created.

6 O’clock Blues, a song by Solange Knowles eased my heart and reminded me of the shelter we have been and will continue to be for each other. I dedicate this to my queer and trans family.

They can sell me a story
And tell me we’re in danger
But our love will never die..
Cause people don’t make the world go round like they used to
But I know if I got one thing
Baby I know got you
You keep me sheltered from the six o’clock blues
Yeah, you keep me sheltered
From the six o’clock blues
And if I know one thing is gonna be alright
Then I know that’s it’s me and you

love is shadowmagic and it reaches out to those we lost and loved so deeply even without knowing

No, it won’t fix everything, but love has often been the chosen tool/weapon/magic chosen by those of us who find ourselves at the bottom of the food chain because of its potential, for power, for release, for a freedom of our own making, for a possibility of loving ourselves so deeply that anything less is unacceptable.

Love is shadowmagic.

ecstatically loving the high priestess within

Oshun and Yemaya all up and through my reading asking me to examine how I show love to myself. Is it a love of condition and requirement, or one of freedom and infinite passion?

What might it mean to seek ecstasy for ourselves?

The love we give to ourselves shouldn’t be one of distance and propriety. It isn’t some abstract thought or idea far-fetched and unreachable knowable only in the mind. It should be an earthy warm sensual thing felt body deep and life-givingly fed by water.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs writes, love is lifeforce. So how do you give yourself life?

love is lifeforce. and breathe out.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs is genius, in the spirit of her foremother June Jordan- but y’all already should have been knew that.

What We Believe:
Love Made Manifest

Distilled from June Jordan’s “The Creative Spirit and Children’s Literature”
Love is lifeforce.

Love is all that supports life.

We run on love.

The creative spirit of the universe exists in each of us and is infinitely greater than any one of us.

The creative spirit is as much as process depending on our receptivity as it is a process depending on our willful conjuring up.

Other lives look to us for usable clues to the positive excitement of just being alive.

Within us there is an orderliness, a perpetual inclination to grow, to become manifest from an invisible beginning.

We are about the task of survival for ourselves and for those who may carry what we offer to them into their own lives.

Love is a serious and tender concern to respect the nature and the spontaneous purpose of other things and people.

Love will manifest a peaceable order among us such that fear, conflict, competition, waste and environmental sacrifice will have no place.

We have to make love powerful.

Love is lifeforce.

We run on love.
