Beltane May Queen Reading

I didn’t have a moment to pause and create a spread for this sabbat like I usually do. In fact most of my day, I spent in a hospital looking after a loved one. It didn’t feel like a very abundant celebration of spring, I have to say. I needed some help.

So here’s a May Queen reading I found because it is Beltane.

Position 1: Safety. Emotional security. What you need to feel safe. MOVEMENT. Too true. I feel better in a crisis when I have all the information and I’m handling the small details. It helps keep my mind of what’s not happening if I’m making it happen. Of course, this has a downside- sweating the small stuff is all well and good if you don’t miss out on the big picture.

Position 2: Abundance. Feelings of plenty. SELF DOUBT. Gut-punch. Okay, yeah this is about right. I’m not very comfortable when things are going too well. This is definitely a growth opportunity for me, and I can say it’s gotten better. Lately though, I’ve had a bit more trying my life than usual.

Position 3: Regeneration. Exploring the possibilities. RELEASE. Letting things go that I don’t have control over and some things I do has definitely been a useful strategy. It’s easier to see abundance when you’re not trying desperately to hold on to things you can’t keep with you.

Position 4: Love. Emotions and relationships. DEFEAT. We’re working on this, lol! The universe continues to have no chill on this particular topic.

Position 5: The Future. The present conceivable outcome based on the flow of cards one through four. COMMUNICATION. This reads more like manifestation. Working on the way I speak my purpose and what I want will be crucial this season. It’s difficult work, tenuous, and immensely consequential.

All of this being said, abundance is not always easily reached for- in fact, looking for and finding abundance in the middle of a challenge is a form of medicine. Hope is a form of abundance. Prayer is abundance. Bringing all that to bear is claiming abundance.

Happy Beltane, my loves.

quick deck review and interview: Oracle of Oddities

Working with the Oracle of Oddities by Claire Goodchild at Black and the Moon today.

I have been crushing on this deck since I first saw it after tracking down the source of her Antique Anatomy tarot (which is also pretty darn cool, btw). I’m pretty easy when it comes to decks, I have to admit- make it weird and stick a bunch of plants on it and you’ve got me.

The version of the Oracle of Oddities I have is actually the second edition. The first run went out of print a while ago and I was quietly devastated. I was excited to find out that Claire was putting together a second edition with new cards and made a point to get them as soon as I could.

The deck interview went a little weird.

Let me see if I can parse this.

There are two ways this goes, looking at this reading. Either this deck and I are going to come to a tragic but aesthetically pleasing separation or…

I’m going to work through this. It feels like this is a deck that requires that I do most of the work. It is not one to turn to when I have no idea where to go. It’s more of a guiding hand rather than access to wisdom that I don’t already have. Overuse could turn… well, toxic. I will add that the first thought I had when I saw this card is that the antidote to a poison often contains the poison itself.

Having had it for a while now, I’ve also noticed I reach for this deck when reading for others and have had a superb time with it. Clients often see and hear what they need to with hardly more than a prompt from me. It grabs the intuition and doesn’t let go until you get what you need to receive.

So here’s to an odd relationship!

Light & Shadow w/ the Life Path Cards

I’m notoriously bad at follow-through with tarot/oracle card challenges however I’m still get pulled in and at least make a good go of it. This particular challenge is deck specific, based on the Life Path Cards by Over The Moon Oracle Cards.

Today’s challenge is the Light & Shadow Exercise.

This is a great exercise to help you get to know the deck and understand the light and shadow aspects of your goals and dreams… Compare and contrast the two images. How are they different? Are there any similarities? How does the light card reflect your goals or ideal situation? How does the shadow card reflect your current difficulties, fears, or things you avoid?

The premise seems to be that being able to visualize what my favorite and least favorite paths are will help me clarify how I process abundance and lack, respectively. It’s an interesting approach to be sure. I flipped through all the cards and I picked the two cards I was most attracted to and most repelled by.

Occasional Oracle: Embrace Chaos, Find Your Freedom

I’m going to call this the Occasional Oracle. Every once in a while, at random I’m called to pull a card with the sense that while the message may be for me in some part, it is also for another spirit- for someone who, with serendipity’s blessing, will come upon it and perhaps be glad for it. I hope that you receive exactly what you need from it.

Today’s card is Seagull from the Winged Enchantment Oracle deck.

Noisy scavengers disrupting our beatific beach experience, seagulls have learned to survive on scraps even as they do their best to remind us that we are the interlopers.

Seagulls are tenacious, chaotic, loud, and unapologetic. There’s a wisdom of freedom to be learned here.

“You are navigating the chaos.
You are exploring deeper waters.
You are boundless supply.”

journey hopes and mercies

I used my Journeying Together spread to lay out possibilities for my trip. Instead of a tarot deck, I decided to go with an oracle, and one I have that’s been unfortunately underused. I love how The Earthbound Oracle offers up intuitively provocative messages with simple symbolism. I need to use this deck more often.

cards from The Earthbound Oracle

With all the air and water showing up, I can tell that it’s going to be a trip about communicating deeply with each other. For me, this isn’t a particularly positive circumstance, no matter how necessary.

Meaningful communication with family for a lot of people, especially queer folks navigating trauma often feels like navigating a minefield blindfolded, triggers aplenty. I do hold on to the fact that nothing about the way this spread laid out promises disaster or negativity. In fact it implies a positive growth from our learning to hear each other.

Learning to give each other space to be truthful, going beyond tolerance and reaching for acceptance. I will hold on to hope and try to allow Yemaya to help us listen and love each other better.

I asked the cards what this week’s story would be, curious to see how my sadly underused Earthbound Oracle would read with a question like that. I was going to ask the question free-form, but I ended up with frames for each position.

1, What is this week’s energy? PERMANENCE

3, What are the challenges? VISION

2, What are the opportunities? ARCANA

Well that energy is certainly there, change and shift, and feelings of barely keeping up. Very practical concerns with work, and understanding… or rather unlocking how it all comes together is the secret of success. I just have to be able to see it, cut through the muck that comes to distract me (impermanent as it is) and go for that end game, that higher knowledge.

balance: message received

All about the ways in which I’m being asked to reevaluate bits and pieces of my life so that I’m not left at a complete loss by the end of the day, without even energy to heal myself. The way the wings burst forth from the acorn also reassures me that this work will yield positive results that we lift me up. It is the second reminder to balance that I’ve received in the last few days.

Lol, maybe it’s time to listen!
